Roof color visualizer & shingle color guide

Picking a shingle color off a tiny sample chip is the hardest part of a roof replacement. Use the visualizer below to see the eight most popular architectural shingle colors on a Memphis-style home — over red brick, tan brick, or siding — then get real samples held up against your own house.

Try it

See it on the house.

Choose a shingle color, then switch the exterior to match your home. Most Memphis-area homes are red brick, tan brick, or light gray siding.

Weathered Wood

The most-requested color in the Memphis metro. Warm tan-and-brown blend that hides dust and pollen between washes.

Pairs with: Red brick, beige or cream siding, bronze gutters

Charcoal

Near-black with gray flecks. Reads modern, makes white trim pop, and is the safest resale color in Shelby County.

Pairs with: White, gray, or navy siding; black windows

Driftwood

Light gray-brown blend. A softer alternative to charcoal that keeps attic temps down a few degrees in August.

Pairs with: Tan brick, stone accents, sage or taupe siding

Pewter Gray

Mid-tone gray that photographs well and works on almost any elevation. Very common on newer Collierville builds.

Pairs with: White, blue, or light gray siding

Barkwood

Rich chocolate brown. Classic on traditional Germantown homes with brick and shutters.

Pairs with: Red or brown brick, cream trim, copper accents

Slate

Blue-gray tone that adds character without going all the way to black.

Pairs with: White or light gray siding, navy shutters

Hickory

Multi-tone brown with amber streaks. Great at breaking up large, plain roof planes.

Pairs with: Variegated brick, stone, earth-tone siding

Shakewood

Light golden brown. The brightest of the popular blends — good for keeping an older ranch from looking heavy.

Pairs with: Cream, yellow, or light tan siding

How to choose

Five rules that keep you from regretting it.

  • Match the brick, not the trim. Brick and stone are permanent; trim gets repainted. Start with the undertone of your masonry — warm (red/orange) brick wants brown or charcoal, cool (gray/white) exteriors take gray or slate.
  • Look at the sample outside, on the roof slope. Shingles look two shades darker on a sunlit roof than they do in your hand. We'll leave full samples with you and hold them up at roof pitch.
  • Drive your own street. If every house on the block is Weathered Wood, a black roof will stand out — sometimes that's good, sometimes it hurts resale. Check HOA rules in Collierville, Germantown, and Arlington before you commit.
  • Darker roofs hide dirt; lighter roofs hide granule loss. Under Memphis pollen and Tennessee humidity, mid-tone blends stay looking clean the longest.
  • Think about resale. Charcoal and Weathered Wood are the two safest colors in Shelby County — they suit the widest range of buyers.
Memphis heat

Do light shingles really keep your house cooler?

A little. In a Memphis July, a black roof surface can hit 160–170°F while a light gray or tan blend runs 10–20°F cooler. That difference is real, but it's small compared to what attic insulation and balanced ventilation do for your power bill.

If cooling cost is your priority, pick the color you actually like, then spend the money on R-38+ attic insulation, clear soffit intake, and a proper ridge vent. If you want both, "cool roof" rated shingles are available in Driftwood and Pewter Gray tones and qualify for some utility rebates.

Shingle color FAQs

What is the most popular shingle color in Memphis?

Weathered Wood and Charcoal. Weathered Wood suits the red and tan brick you see all over Bartlett, Cordova, and Germantown; Charcoal is the go-to on gray, white, and navy exteriors and is the safest resale choice.

What roof color goes with red brick?

Weathered Wood, Barkwood, and Charcoal. Avoid strong blue-grays like Slate — they fight the orange undertones in most Memphis-area brick.

Does my HOA have to approve the color?

In a lot of Collierville, Germantown, and Arlington subdivisions, yes. Check your covenants before ordering. We'll give you the manufacturer's color name and a sample board for the submission.

Can I see a real sample on my roof before I decide?

Yes, and you should. We bring full shingle samples to the free inspection and hold them against your brick at roof pitch, in daylight. No charge, no obligation.

Want real samples held up to your house?

We'll bring the sample board to your free roof inspection anywhere in the Memphis metro — Bartlett, Cordova, Germantown, Collierville, Arlington, and Lakeland.
